PUBLIC SECTOR Use of electronic tags within the Public Sector has grown considerably in recent years. Typical current applications include: Anti-theft Security Proof of Ownership Planned Maintenance Traceability Asset Tracking Auditing The advantage of electronic tags is that they provide all of the above at a single cost. Often alternative means of identifying assets such as bar codes, sticky labels, chemical etching, etc. can be easily removed or defaced - intentionally or otherwise. With ever increasing instances of 'no win - no fee' cases being brought against Public Sector organisations, accurate and indisputable identification of assets becomes a vital requirement. An example might be; a maintenance engineer attends a Residential Home and carries out servicing on a number of wheelchairs. Some time later a wheel falls off one of the chairs and injury results. If existing 'sticky label' identification has been removed or defaced, proving that this particular chair was one of the ones serviced becomes a crucial part of any litigation process. The use of electronic tags overcomes this type of problem as tags are implanted into the asset and cannot be removed. Establishing the identity of a particular asset simply requires a quick scan with a tag reading device. Contact or line-of-site is not required as tag reading angles are spherical and can take place up to *50cm from the tag.
